Overview

Roots Branches Leaves is a personal record-keeping tool for building and preserving your family tree. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and how it is protected. We treat the stories, photos, and health details you record as yours and keep them private to your account unless you choose to share them.

Information you provide

• Account details such as your name and email address, used to identify you and secure your account.
• Family tree data — names, dates, places, relationships, biographies, milestones, documents, and optional health history — that you enter for the people in your tree.
• Photos and videos you upload to a person's profile. Video hosting is provided by a third-party service (Mux) under their own data-processing terms.
• Payment information when you subscribe. Payments are processed by our payment provider (Stripe); we do not store your full card details.

Information collected automatically

When you use the site we may collect basic technical information, such as browser type, device type, and limited usage data, to keep the service running, secure, and functioning well. We use cookies and similar technologies only as needed for authentication and essential site function.

How we use your information

• To provide, maintain, and improve the service and your account.
• To process payments and manage your subscription.
• To respond to your questions and provide support.
• To safeguard your account and the service against abuse.

We do not sell your personal information or your family data. We do not use your family tree content for advertising.

Sharing and access

Your tree is private to you by default. You may invite relatives to view or contribute to a tree you own, with the permission level you choose (Owner, Contributor, or Viewer). Only people you invite can see the data for a shared tree.

Health history

The health history tab is optional, self-reported, and stored privately in your account. It is not a medical record and we do not use it for diagnosis, treatment, or insurance decisions. You decide whether to record it or share it.

Retention and deletion

We keep your data for as long as your account is active and you ask us to keep it. You can delete people, media, and records at any time. To cancel your account and request deletion of your data, use the account settings or contact us and we will honor your request, subject to legal retention requirements.

Data security

We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your data, including encryption in transit and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Keep your own backups of irreplaceable photos and videos.

Third-party services

We work with a small number of trusted providers to run the service — such as hosting, payment processing, and video hosting. They may process data only to perform services on our behalf and are bound by their own privacy and data-processing obligations.

Your rights

You may access, correct, export, or delete the personal information you have provided, subject to applicable law. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated effective date. Continued use of the service after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
